hey I was just wondering about compression, I got a fairly nice vocal track, al it needs is a bit of compression to make it sound great, but the thing is, it's almost whisperd, so when I put of the sompression, it seems to make the breathing louder, any way to work around that?

thanks

is it supposed to be soft and breathy?

why does it need compression?

i guess set the threshold higher than you normally would, but then you will get like minimum reduction, if any, but maybe the breaths wouldnt be emphasized as much.

if it can go without it, leave it off. no sense in over processing. compression is really to maintain dynamics (right?? i think so..) and if you are looking for a song with alot of changes and emphasis on some words/phrases, then let it be.

good luck, and i could be absoluetley positutley wrong in every way!

If the breathing sounds are between each verse/phrase then you could try to manually edit them out but that may sound unnatural.

If the vocals are "whispered" then I don't see why you would need compression?

Maybe there's another effect you can use to give the sound you want.

Find the breathing in the track and manually lower the volume level by about 2-3 db more than the gain reduction on the compressor... that way the breathing should sound about normal in the track... or not, just a thought, not necessarily a good one.

Peace.

+1 vote for not using compression at all on the vocals. Not all vocals need compression.

thanks for the reply, the reason I'm putting on the compresion, is becouse it livens it up alot, the vocals seem a bit dead without it, though I'm worming up my vocal chords (right now actually) so I can sing the song a bit louder so it isn't a whisperd, though If I get the same problem again I think a combanation of
TragikRemix's and Fletcher would work great, becouse I've sone it where I turn the greathing all the way down, and it does indeed sound way unatural.

btw, stop hassleing me on my spelling, I can speek 3 difrent languages and working on 2 more, so give me a break, yes I'm going 2 collage, (though I'm taking a year off..) and next time please SIGN your rep. I'm not mad, becouse you have a valid point, it just seems rude not to sign it..

Maybe, depending..
When I'm looking for 'lively/forward/airy' I think faster release, (vs slow/more pulled back).
Pumping', and too much swell on the tails.. suggests too much g/r, too fast attack, or both.
Again, maybe, depending..

Right on. Pre-gain leveling job one, the 'finishing compressor stage step two. :)

I don't see where there is a problem, unless the breathing is WAY not what you want. I personally like to use compression on most vocal tracks, I don't care how "loud" the singing is (whispers to screams). Unless you're dealing with a real professional singer, chances are you'll need some compression anyway.

As far as the breathing, what don't you like about it? I've heard some really great songs with pretty heavy breathing on them. Muse, for example often keeps the heavy in between breaths on the track. Maybe if we heard some samples we could help more?

the thing that I don't like about them is the fact there not musical, if it were a soft acustic song, I would be fine, but it's a whole band (a similar song to some of the old Oasis tunes) but yeah, I think the best option 4 me is just 2 re-record it. and get some extra wind screen protection, (angleing the mic, sock, I had already used a cheep wind screen).

Thanks alot 4 all your help! (I've read al of it, and taken in all of it for future refrence, thanks!)

My girlfriend likes when she can hear the vocalist breathing...

Maybe you could just do without the compression. The compression is only making the breathing louder, considering that its quieter than the vocals.

Just like the de-esser plug ins , theres gotta be a de-breather. :)

Okay..I know I'm lame,sorry.
