Stereo speakers?

I'm about to buy a 424 MKIII and had a few questions...

I've got a Sony stereo with left and right inputs on the back. I can use that for mixing down, right?
Also, I plan to buy some good quality headphones for listening while recording, but is it possible to use my stereo speakers for monitoring while mixing down? If not, will the headphones do?
Does anyone have any good recommendations for headphones, say $150 or under?

Well thanks a lot for any help you can give, sorry if I sound a bit dumb :)

Check out the Sony MDR-7506 headphones.
Under $100. Really nice. But for mixing down I'd recommend using speakers. Headphones provide a degree of stereo separation that's unavailable in a speaker signal. You want to get some feedback about this aspect of the mix that's not colored by the headphones.
