Hi,

I've been recording Blues Fest in Jonesboro, AR. Acts vary from electric blues to bluegrass and I will use the same setup for 5 or 6 acts. I've been using a stereo pair of omnis about 20-30 feet from the stage and 12 to 20 feet apart. I place them in front of the sound board trying to capture what soundwoman hears.

So far I've used my Shure SM61s and my Realistic 1070bs. Both gave good results.

Any suggestions on mics or mic placement? I will be doing this again in the spring and I could do some a/b/c comparisons by setting up multiple pairs and recording the same show.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

for capturing a PA???
hell, just point at the stacks. I would suggest either a pair of AT4050s or Studio projects c4s..mixed with the board feed.

PA and Instrument amps

Hi,

It's a mix of PA and instrument amps. We don't mic most amps and only a little kick. Sometimes acoustic guitar goes through the PA but it is mainly a vocals PA.

I am really shooting for a stereo image of a live band playing outside which is what we have.

I haven't tried patching off the board. Since it's mostly vocal mics it would give me a vocal mix or individual vocals.

We use a Peavey 12 channel mixer, MD12 I think. I'm recording on a Fostex VF160. I guess just a regular 1/4 inch patch cable would take an output over to the deck.

I have also close miced the instrument amps and hung drum mics at this same location. I just can't do that much setup at Blues Fest where sometimes we have seven acts in one afternoon with ten minute turnarounds. Hence, stereo pair.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry
