I really need some help choosing these. I have just come on to around 300 or so dollars and need a set of overheads for drums or stereo acoustic guitar. So many people reccommend the NT-5 but i have heard so many people who hate them. I dont want to get a really cheap set like the mxls cause i have enough for better equipment. The C4s and some AT mics look nice. Please give my a hand with choosing these mics. I'm 16 and wont have the luxury to try again if i mess up.

Not trying to be rude, but this exact same question is covered over and over and over again. Have you looked at the recent topics covering this and/or searched for past posts for it? If you weren't able to find your answer there, then we'll be more than glad to help you out...it's just that this exact question can can come up quite literally two or three times a week. I'll go ahead and give you a couple of hints too...do some research on the Oktava MC012 mics. They might be right in the alley of what you're looking for.

The oktava's rock in that price range. Experiment with placement, sometimes just being out in front about five feet and up five feet can be great! Depends on room, drums, drummer, etc

abm123, another great option right now is GC has Groove Tube GT33's on sale for $99 each. They also have GT44 tube mics on sale for $199 each. I'd recommend you round up another $100 and get a pair of GT44's. If not - GT33's are a great set of mics. And both the 33's and 44's come standard with cardioid capules, but you have the option to later buy omni capsules.

Those mics are the best deal on the market right now.

what Dot said.
Unless you have a real nice room for recording drums in you may want cardoid anyway. You can get omni capsules later for the gt44's. If I were to describe their sound I would call them "ribbonish" I was shocked for the money.

Yo ATM- I like the Oktavas as overheads, and the C-4's on acoustic. I think in your price range, the C-4's rock, simple as that. That way you get cardioid and omni capsules up front, and excellent customer service, which is definitely not an Oktava strong suit. The GT mics I have never used, but I would love to.-Richie

Dan,
How do those GT's sound on acoustic?

Both GT are excellent. The 44's will be a little more mellow, the 33's a little livelier. The 33's and 44's sound good on just about everything - amps, vocals, percussion, acoustic instruments, drum OH's - and are real workhorse mics - especially in a studio doing rock. I've described these mics as "meaty". They're full and robust. Not hyped like a lot of the Chinese-made mics.

I recommend that anyone who's near a GC and has the bucks should go pick up a pair. [ or order a pair over the phone with a credit card, because they're now a special-order item. ] The 44's would be my first pick at $400/pr, but the 33's are great, too - and at $200 for a pair...

I almost wet myself after reading that. Sadly, I just spoke with a GC representative, and he confirmed that this promotion ended in November.

Dammit.

I know of people who have gone and gotten them within the last week. I also spoke with a local GC store today and they said they were out of stock and that items were special order, but that the prices were still good.

I'll second those votes for the GT44. I have a pair that I've gotten fantastic results with (I have the Alesis version known as the AM40)

At the GC prices mentioned, I'm tempted to look into a pair of GT33s just for good measure.

I dont see them mentioned here but ive got a pair of Samson C02 pencil condensers that work very nicely as overhead and on acoustic guitar..Fairly inexpensive.
