I apologize for such a stupid question, but I'm still learning, and trying to figure things out. .

I was planning on recording a drum kit on (2) tracks-- using 3 mics on a Tascam 424mkII, 4 track. . I was planning on recording the kick drum on TRACK 1 .. . and then using a pair of stereo overhead condensers-- both mics on TRACK 2.

My question is, if the 2 overhead mics are being recorded on the same track, . .will they be recording in stereo??? would I just be better off recording, using a kick mic on TRACK 1, and (1) overhead mic on TRACK 2, and maybe adding a snare mic to the same Track 2 . .

Thanks guys. .

Two mics bussed to a single track is going to be mono.

Does the kick mic have to be on it's own track? If not you can buss the left overhead to one track (1 or 3), the right to another (2 or 4) and the kick to both. Ditto for the snare mic (buss to both tracks).

Of course, that'll only leave you two tracks for everything else. What else are you planning to add?

Yes he can.

It's just a simple matter of assigning all the tracks you want to bounce to a buss, left or right (or a pair of busses, if you want to bounce in stereo), and arming the target track.

Example.

Let's say I have three tracks worth of material (say: drums, bass and guitar) and my production requires six tracks (an extra guitar, a lead vocal and a backing vocal). Rather than putting those on one track I can bounce the first three tracks down to the fourth, empty, track. Like this

  • Place bounce tracks (1 to 3) into "tape" mode
  • Place target track (4) into mic/line mode
  • Make sure all bounce tracks are "Safe" (ie: ensure the rec function switches associated with these tracks is set to Safe or Off)
  • Make sure record function switch on target track is set to L-R
  • Pan all bounce tracks hard right
  • Make adjustments to EQ and levels of bounce tracks
  • Record

I now have bass, guitar and drums in glorious mono on Track 4, and tracks 1 to 3 open for new material.

Easy
