stereo mixdown

what kind of reverb/compression/other effects should i consider on a stereo mixdown of a song to tie the whole track together...i'm especially interested in what you guys have to say about the reverb - i want to the stereo mix to sound cohesive but not too reverb-ish.
any suggestions?

Yeah, using a little verb on a whole mix can be pretty cool. I like to keep the hang time of the verb pretty quick regardless of how big the verb is. Keep it simple and experiment.

Being very general about it here, but putting verb on some tracks and not on others, or even different verbs on some tracks, would be more common than verb on the entire mix. It might be more applicable on a sparse arrangement, maybe less so as the tracks and mix density go up.
No rules though as they say.
