Stereo Microphones

Can a decent live recording be made using one or two stereo mikes?
Perhaps a simple digital stereo recording.
What microphones offer the most bang for the buck?

I've tried it many times. I think that the acoustics of the room (and of course, placement) are more important than which mic you choose- given a fairly decent pair of mics (or one stereo mic) to begin with. Plenty of "bang for the buck" with the Rode NT-1. Lots of disagreement here about them, but I still think they're a great deal if you can't afford more than $400 for the pair. And I've seen them for $360/pair on the net.
