Whats the main reason to use identical mics when stereo mic-ing? Seems like different mics yielding slightly different sounds would be more benficial.
Any science behind this?

Well, there is no right or wrong. As far as conventional wisdom goes, if you were doing a coincident pair, a Jecklin disc, ORTF or the like, a matched pair is predictable. On the other hand if you were doing middle/side micing, you'd definately be using two different mics. A cardiod condenser and a figure of eight.

Track Rat has it right. Kinda like taking a stereo picture. If you want it accurate, you match the lenses. You wouldn't take a stereo picture using a wide angle lens for one side and a telephoto lens for the other side and expect to see a stereo image.

If you're micing every instrument separately, then you would choose mics that enhance or are suitable for the instrument.
