i notice that in pro mixes the vocals have a wider stereo image than just in the center of the track. How is this accomplished and are there any guidelines as to how far to widen the vocal??? thanks.

what you're probably hearing is just reverb/delay added tastefully

In modern vocal mixes vox gets quite alot of processing. Usually there is one short verb and one long verb. Some delays usually too (not very noticeable). But one thing that widens the image most is this trick:

Dublicate the vocal track and process it very heavily. Compress the heck out of it. Also EQ it to sound "big". Then spread this track over the stereoimage and mix in with the original vocal (just enought for it to do the trick; you don't really want to hear this track). The tricky part is how to process this track to sound "right" and how to spread it. The spread can be done even with short delays (5-20ms; too short for ear to notice the delay), but the pros usually use Eventide harmonizer for this. Comparing the results achieved by delays and Eventide... oh well, Eventide kicks ass if you need to spread something ;).
