Returned from the dead
I pulled an old stereo 7 band EQ out of an old home stereo system (probably late 80's or early 90's) that uses RCA connectors. It just big enough that if I stripped the RCA cables and put 1/4" female connectors on and some rack ears it would fit perfectly in two rack spaces.

Any reason why this would be a bad idea?

well there are two definite sides to this argument. i have done this, but i wouldn't strip RCA cables. just buy a 1/4' to RCA adapter. its like 4 bucks at guitar center. i also wouldn't put it in a rack, id only use it for recording purposes, and only if it helped towards the sound i was going for.

I Think that's just what I'm gonna do. I'm just gonna keep in on top of my rack.

Now how good it is is a whole different story cause I have no idea.
It's a fisher EQ-272 Studio-Standard.
Of course I know not to take studio standard literally... but still...

if it sounds good, then it sounds good. if not use it on your home stereo. then tweak that too perfection.

I have done this, too, but the RCA to 1/4" adapters were by far the most common point of failure. Why do you say only for recording? Recording is a more demanding environment than playing live, signal-to-noise-wise.
