stephen malkmus/todd rundgren vocals

i was listening to some of the stephen malkmus solo stuff and sometimes the vocals reminded me of that 70's new york city kinda sound like on early todd rundgren records. its hard for me to describe but maybe someone knows what i mean. it seems lo-fi sounding but its very pleasing to my ear for some reason. does anyone have any insight on how to achieve this sound or how rundgren or malkmus for that matter have recorded their vocals in the past.

it seem similiar to the vocals on Televison albums

I also really dig the way the drums sound of early rundgren albums but i suppose thats another thread
 
If your talking early Todd, for one thing, it's obviously all analog to tape. Acoustics that are deader than a doornail. Almost clinicaly flat. Seriously compressed.

If you want equipment specifics, I'd have to go find my old articles, which is not going to happen any time soon. When I do find them, I'll let you know. Suffice it to say, that anything he used during that time period would cost you more arms and legs than you probably have.

When it comes to drums, he was always an sm-57 guy. I don't know about overheads though.

I have no idea who Steven Malkmus is.
