hey guys
i'm getting a MIDI synth here soon, and i have cakewalk pro audio 9. i am reading through the MIDI help files, and step recording is what i'm interested in. as i understand, this is how you can program passages that might not be possible to play in a live recording situation. if i'm wrong, please fill me in! hehe...... well what throws me for a loop is when you click on the step recording, and it gives you two options for note duration and something else. what the heck is this?!?!? it didn't really explain it well. and also, at what point do you record the note? i appreciate ANY help you can give! thanks everyone

Note duration is how long you want the note or notes that you are recording at that time to be held out. The step size is when you want the following note to be played. When this is set then you just press what ever note you want to be recorded for that certain slot, then it proceeds to the next step that you have selected. Hope this helps, it's a little confusing but once you get it it's really helpful. Later.......Josh

Justin,

> step recording is what i'm interested in.

I suggest a combination of playing at slow speed and either step recording or manual note entry in the Piano Roll. One big advantage of playing at slow speed - drop it down to 1/4 speed if necessary - is you aren't limited to entering only eighth notes, or sixteenth notes, or whatever. With step recording you have to constantly switch back and forth from one duration to another. To me, that process is too far removed from actually making music.

When I do need to manually enter notes I prefer doing it in the piano roll. This way you can copy existing notes that are already at the right duration and velocity, and drag the copies to wherever you want. I find this much faster than clicking to create each note, and then having to go back to set all the note properties later.
