static on recording

Hello all,

I was playing back some guitar tracks that I recorded a couple of days ago on my tascam 246.

I had placed my 246 down, because one day it just stopped recording. I would record a track, play it back, only to hear nothing. So, I was like "oh man, here we go again."

But 2 days later, I demagged the heads and metal parts in the 246 tape deck with the e-3 demag, plugged it back in, recorded some guitar tracks direct from the guitar into the mixer.... and it worked.

So I guess there was enough magnetization on the heads to not let me record any signal at all??

Anyway, back to my original question.

So I was listening back to the guitar tracks that I recorded (4 of them layered on top of one another)... and the 1st track, the rhythm, had some static that would come in and out toward the beginning of the track. REALLY annoying, when everything else sounds so clear.

So, could this just be dirty head :)? I know the simple way to learn if it's the problem, would be to clean the head, of course, and record some more and see if it goes away, but I just wanted to ask here on the board before I get home to work on it again.

Thanks for your time.
