I am an artist myself, but I do enjoy recording other people. My ultimate goal for myself in the next few years is to establish myself as an engineer. I think it's time to start building something a little more substantial than what I'm using right now. It's gotten me by, but I need something more.

I've been recording small, local acts but I want to expand and learn more.

I'm currently using Guitar Center's $400 recording set up from last year:

I've gone into Guitar Center and got priced out for (what I'd think to be) a pretty basic set up.

After posting that in a different forum, two people replied that it was a a little much to spend on equipment right now. Looking at my bank account, I think that would be pretty impulsive. LOL! So, now I'm looking for a little help from you guys on what would be good for what I'm doing.

I appreciate all feedback!

Right now I primarily deal with Hip-Hop. I am looking to expand who I work with. I've recently recorded and mixed my first acoustic song Always Yours by Kristen Holt. I'd love to do more things like this. I don't want to be a one-dimensional engineer. I love making all kinds of music.

Starting with a microphone (because this is the microphone section) what microphone do you recommend that will allow me to use it diversely? I'll be looking into getting different mics for different things, but my budget won't allow that right now.

If you have any other things to include in a really good (affordable) set up, I am all ears on that, too. You know, like the things that I listed above that was recommended to me by the associate at Guitar Center.

Thank you for your time! I really appreciate it.

Edit:
I am using Pro Tools 8 LE, by the way.
(Forgot to mention that)

The EV RE320 is an all around useful microphone to capture different sources.
And why haven't you switched over to Reaper for your DAW as the rest of the world has?

Thanks for your suggestion! I'm going to add that to my list and research it more.

Question: Why would I switch to Reaper? What would be my benefits? I use Pro Tools because that's what I was taught on when I took my first audio engineering classes. I'm open to learning and experimenting with new things, but I haven't heard anything about Reaper until this very second. Complete novice, right? LOL.

I'm googling it now, btw.

Sorry still on my first cup of espresso hence a little foggy! :p

I was reading an other post that stated he was using a different DAW and I mixed the two of you up. In fact I see know that you didn't even mention the DAW that you used.

You are going to have to get an interface that has multi in/out puts as an upgrade.

LOL! No problem.

So, by interface, would that be the preamp that was suggested to me or no? My thing is, looking at that, I don't want to feel intimidated by the knobs. I honestly don't know what they do. So I don't want to spend beyond my means to get something that looks nice.

Yes you want to look into an interface that has preamps like your Mbox but with only 2 inputs your kind of limited to what you can get done while recording ..... drums would be out that's for sure!

It's all very simple! each channel has it's own knob and that's why there are so many when you get right down to it there are very few per knobs per channel.

I would look for something a little different than that prsonus though.
