Hi all - I'm just starting out in the world of home PC recording (my last experience of computer music-making was OctoMED on the Amiga!) and am wondering what gear to get.

I already have a decent PC and a copy of Cubase but am looking for everything else.
My budget is around £750 for everything.
I would like to keep it down to £500 if possible.

I will want 2 microphones - vocals and guitar/bass cabs will be their main duties. I will want to use them simultaniously.

I will need a good soundcard - I was looking at this (Delta66):
http://www.soundslive.co.uk/common/moreinfo.asp?ID=108

I know the Delta1010 is meant to be the best (a freind of mine has one), but I reckon that'll drive me over budget almost immediatly.

I guess I need a Mic pre-amp, although I'm not sure. If I do need one what should I get?

What leads and converters might I need?
I will be recording guitar (mic and direct simultaniously), bass (mic and direct simultaniously), vocals, strings, keyboards etc...

Is there any other gear I will need to get started?
What kind of prices will I be looking to pay for mic stands, leads etc.

One thing that always strikes me about these soundcards is that they have XLR and phono connectors in abundance, but never any guitar-jack style inputs >:(
I guess I will need lots of jack->phono converters?

I don't plan to use more than 2 mics at the same time (I won't me mic-ing up a drum-kit just yet) but I would like to be able to record 4 line and 2 mic signals at once (for example).

Here's a list of gear I have that will be being used in my setup:
Fender Vibrolux Custom Reverb Guitar amp (mic'd)
Korg Triton (direct stereo from regular jack outputs (or sp-dif/midi? I know nothing about midi and stuff.))
Cheapo Bass (direct)
Small Ross bass amp (mic'd)
Voice (mic'd)
Various acoustic instruments (mic'd)

Here's my PC spec (I'm getting a 120GB HDD soon which has already been budgeted for):
Abit KX7-333 Mainboard || AMD Athlon XP1800+ CPU || Thermaltake Volcano6CU HS/Fan || Iiyama VM Pro 411 Monitor || ASUS GeForce4 Ti4200 (128MB) @ 263/545 || Ennermax 330W PSU || IBM 75GXP HDD (30GB) || Seagate HDD (10 GB) || Plextor CD-RW (16/10/40A) || Terayon Cable Modem connected by RealTek Ethernet to NTL 512k service || Yamaha WaveForce DS-XG soundcard || 2 PCI-slot Exhaust Fans || 2 Case fans (1 front 1 rear) || Coolermaster Cooldrive (HDD heatsink) || Windows XP Pro

Many thanks for your help :D

The Delta66 is a nice interface but only 4 analog {1/4" ins} and 2 digital.
You would need the 1010 for more inputs although a mixer would be a good investment as well. If not a mixer and you want preamps, look at m-audio as well for the audiobuddy as an example.

Great - that's what I was hoping somebody would say.

Thanks for the advice :)
