i want to start home recording and i need to know what i need to do it an what the things do.

How much will it cost for a basic home studio? im not wanting to insulae any walls or anything drastic, i just want to make some music :p

i will be recording guitar and drums into my pc.

can anyone help?

You lack the know how and before you sink money into anythin, you should work on that first, it's free. For recording, education is the primary piece of equipment. Read this website daily for about 3 months straight before you invest a nickel.

Welcome to the BBS!

NYMorningStar is right. I'd start off my taking a look at the spec on your PC then you'll know whether or not you need to upgrade it.

i got my pc a few weeks ago so i think it should be up to scratch.

i used a crappy mic to record my guitar but i want to know how to do it so its better quality and so i can put drums to it.

The minimum:
Instruments
A mic
Computer with stock soundcard
cables
Headphones
lava lamp

Primary upgrades:
Replace stock soundcard with a real audio interface (search an online music store for "audio interface." Read all the product docs to get a feel for how they differ.) This is pretty critical. Your stock soundcard will sound like ass.
Get some decent speakers for monitoring. (search the same websites for "studio monitors." Decent hifi speakers can work well, though, or even better than cheap monitors).
More mics.
Acoustic treatment - at least a few bass traps.

out of those two i don't know.

Firewire is always better than usb1 so I guess I just answered my own question.

problem is behringer makes some sketchy equipment (but there are a few gems hidden in all the junk)

I really wouldn't trust a behr interface.

if you're recording drums like you said you're gonna likely want more tracks too.. you might think you can get by but trust me.. recording gear is addictive and you'll want to upgrade in no time.

I'd suggest saving a little bit more and going with something like a m-audio delta 1010lt or if you want firewire you could look into something like a firepod.. (although my recent experience would tell me to suggest something else).

Its an electic drum kit, not an acoustic, so i will only need one channel.

will i need a mixer? my friends got a spare 6 channel one.

Idealy if recording Drums (Even Electric Drums) you would probably want to record them in Stereo (2 tracks ,Left and Right) , and if you want to record the drums and Guitar,Bass at the same time then I suggest a interface with a Minimum of 4 inputs....

Also if you are going to record everything DI (at Line level and not micing amps) then you really don"t need any Preamps accept maybe one for Vocals....

For a Bare minimum setup you could get away with a M-audio delta 44 (4 ins and 4 outs) and Maybe a cheap single channel Mic preamp for recording Vocals and be able to record drums and Bass and Guitar at the same time....

This would be a Prety cheap setup and you would probably would grow out of it Pretty quickly but it would get you recording for probably under $200.....
