Starting a portable recording studio

Friends. I want to buy some equipment to start a portable recording studio. This might be a little long but I seriously need some info. I recently went through a magazine of musicians friend and am looking into buying a Berhringer Eurorack UB2442FX-Pro mixer which will connect to a BOSS 864 multitrack recorder which I then want to download to Ableton live 3 software on my computer. Various condenser mics, regular mics and a 7 pc drum mic set will be used. I also included the basic headphones and pop filters. Will this work effectively or would you recommend any other means to record without putting a hole in my pocket. Also the recorder is 16 bit but can I transfer to 24 bit with the computer software. I hope someone can help me and I will be greatfull for your cooperation. Thank you
 
Musicians Friend is a good place to start, but I suggest you visit at least half a dozen other stores and as many catalogs before you make any decisions.

This is gear that you're going to be stuck with once you plunk down your coinage, so make darn sure that it's what you want.

If something is tracked in 16 bit, all that you can do with 24 bit is make a 24 bit version of the 16 bitness. So no, without some arcane digital heroics it is not possible to bump 16 bit audio up to 24 bit audio.

And I would say you've chosen an odd platform w/Live 3.0. A better choice for what you're looking for would be Tracktion:

So you want to be able to record up to a 7pc drum set then the normal vocals guitar bass keyboard....at a time right?

What is your budget? What quality are you expecting to get?
 
I second the support of Tracktion. As many issues as I have with the company Mackie, Tracktion was written by a guy named Jules who sold it through Raw Material Software, and later sold it to Mackie.
 
Thanks guys. My idea is to first record a practice session and from there record individual players with retakes of the songs whenever their time is convenient, download them to computer and finally make one final mix.
