Please excuse me if these seem stupid and easy questions. For xmas my son's present as he plays guitar and drums and wants to be the next 'Tom petty' :P.

Anyway I bought a Roland U-8 USB from ebay at a resonable price (looked into other auctions etc and got it 2nd hand for under £100).

Please excuse the long post try and get as much info as possible.

I have my own PC/Internet shop so I am fairly technical. But music I am not!!!! USB is Plug and Play (to a certain degree). First problem I had was that the drivers didnt work!! Installed device drivers first as per manual and most USB devices. ie plugged in and asked for drivers, I told the pc to look in the D:/drivers area as per manual. At end it came up with problem completing installation (class handler). So looked on net and found that there are updated drivers for Windows XP. (I am on WinXp sp2). These seem to work and the device is installed in My Devices (sound and game controllers). Next I insert the included CD with software Cubasis etc. First window pops up saying that the device is not installed correctly. So spent many hours removing (using their uninstall tool) as well as installing on my laptop, my pc. Same error message, i contacted the ebay seller and he told me to ignore the message, carry on installing and adjust setting in the application.

Did this and I could get guitar recording and playing in wavelab lite. But cubasis didnt do anything (tried play/recording setting) (did notice that disable audion was checked in Audio properties, couldnt turn it on), read that MODEM USB drivers can interferr with the devices, so removed all other sound stuff. Still no joy, been reading these forums most of the day and seen many topics about pre amps, etc which confusese me a little. I was under the impression i could just plug the U-8 in, install software, put the guitar directly into the U-8 and he could then start playing 'stairway to heaven' :P. But now I am not sure if this si correct as the manual says for computer use you need a Guitar, external amp, headphones, mic, cables to connect them (not included)

Could some explain the set up that is easiest for me?

PS VSC 3.o wont install error on install saying about not being windowsNT compatible. <-- do I need this?

Possible that the device is faulty? as this seems to be the most hardest thing ever to install on winXp :p

Look forward to some interesting replies and I would like to thank you in advance for taking time to read my problems.

Regards

Biff

got pretty much the exact same problem mate. i'm 15, and am well experienced in the workings of computers and audio equipment despite what you may think!

anyway, i got given a heck of a lot of ex-demo edirol and roland stuff from someone who used to work for them, the majority of it all was still factory sealed so was brand new! so i'm well chuffed about that. one of the things i got was the Roland U-8. had identical problems as you did, cd provided wouldn't work (as it's for windows 98 only and i also have windows xp with sp2), so downloaded latest drivers from the edirol site (as you did), had an error when installing those but i ignored it and it recognises the U-8 fine. installed the U-8 controller software (cakewalk) after clicking 'no' to that 'driver not installed' message.. got an error during installation of that TOO saying 'wavelab error' or something.

after all that, restarting twice, unplugging and plugging in again the U-8, the software refuses to load. i get the 'please wait a moment' flash up box when you click on 'U-8 Controller', and the splash picture of the program starting up, but it just freezes there and won't go any further. Seriously annoying, this is professional kit and no obvious solution of getting it working with XP anywhere on the web, it just takes the piss to be quite honest..

really disappointed, if anyone knows a fix for this problem i'd love for you to share :)

Roland U8 and drivers

Yes! Its a problem, probably best to go back to using Windows ME, 2000 or anything earlier than XP. I too am a computer tech have a PC shop. I am also into music recording
in a big way, as in writing backing tracks Audio and Midi.
I have also bought a Data Becker Pro application software music centre, to try out which has a 64 track sequencer and recording software. Has the same problems as using a U8. It requires an older version of windows. So I have ME as well. Just means that you use two PC's or have twin sysytems on one PC? Easier to look at two monitors though, it speeds work processes up.
The one good thing about Data Becker Pro is that apparently it runs on LINUX which I would do all day long if it works?
Just waiting for a notebook to turn up that I've bought and I'll load it on Linux Xandros. I'll let you know how it is in a later forum. Anyone using it?:):
