hey folks,

i'm sure this is an oft discussed topic, but since new standalone cd burners seem to be introduced regularly, i thought i'd ask.

a bit of boring background first:

i'm considering buying a standalone cd burner to master to. i've already been the daw route, and while i understand its merits, i found it to be draining creatively. i'm very comfortable with the adat-mixer-outboard gear format and use alot of 'guerilla' recording techniques with stomp boxes and such, so that's what i'm using. we could argue all day long about 16bits and such, but i still hear better recordings and mixes with equivalent equipment, so i feel like i still haven't fully tapped my antiquated gear's potential. however, i would like to get the 2 track mix into my pc so i can rough master for track to track levels and such. i only have one pc and it's in the house so my daughter can play games and my wife can surf, etc. my studio is in a detached garage converted studio. soooooo, i thought that being able to mix to a cd and then take the cd inside to my pc for editing and burning more cd's would be perfect for my needs.

all this leads to the final question of available cd burners. i need to stay around $500. can anyone offer any advice or opinions on standalone cd burners in this price range?

a worry i have with these burners is a/d converters and reliability. i've been perfectly happy with the sound of mixing down to my old panasonic sv3500 dat (18 bit). but i've always sent the dat off to be semi-pro mastered in the past. now i'm just making music to be passed along to friends and such, so i'd like to be able to do it at home without having a huge learning curve or totally changing the way i record. am i being realistic in thinking that a standalone cd burner for under $500 can perform as reliably as my old, trustworthy dat? i hope so :-)

anyway, thanks for any advice!

¡El próspero Año Nuevo!

Oops....I think that was me you're talking about. But I do remember apologizing to you for my constipated brain and diarhetic mouth. Anyhow, we ended up pals, right?

How you doin? I've been at the IUMA BBS for a while still tryin' to learn this great hobby of recording. Hope your holidays were good and your new year will be prosperous and safe for you and yours.
