A friend of mine wanted to buy a stand alone cd burner for his church and asked me, and I told him I have no idea. So I figured I'd ask you guys. Does a stand alone cd burner with RCA or otherwise, inputs for under 300 exist?

I'd say, yes. You're talking about an audio component. I saw the title and thought about a data component, which I have in usb. How about minidisk? that's available and re-writable. There's probably a lot of options.

im looking for one myself..totally independent from the puter and stand alone...tascam has a bunch, but even second hand they dont go for cheap..

i think pioneer has some pretty cheap, i would say plextor does too..but im still looking into it, i dont really have a clue about these two brands...

I have a philips cdr770 that I bought new for under $300 years ago. Never had any problems with it either.

EZ man,

u just saved my life.

tell me something..how the hell do i connect the analog "ins" on this thing from the line outs of a tascam portastudio?
its all i need to know :D

tanx.

I have a Phillips CDR775 which was less than $300 when I got it about 3-4 years ago. In addition to Phillips, Sony makes a stand alone CD burner in the $300 range.

I would think you should be able to take the stereo outs from the Portastudio into the audio ins on the CD burner. The burner likely has a parameter control to select if the input is analog or digital.

If the Porta studio had 1/4" outs and the burner has RCA ins you simply need to purchase the proper cable or adaptor jacks.

Mikeh, does the 775 have that parameter?
is there such thing as a rca adapter for unbalanced jacks?

i have to look for that.

tanx!

how is using one of these better or worse than using an optical drive on a pc?

Here is how it is better.....
1) MUCH cheaper
2) Much less bulky
3) Burns in real time
4) Much easier to learn to use
5) Much quieter

Here is how it is worse
1) No editing

What kind of out's is there on the Portastudio?

I don't think one is better than the other. I have mine because I use a Tascam TM D1000 digital mixer. I am able to utilize the effects on it before burning to disc. I will sometimes compress the 2 track master on it's way to cd. The Tascam has decent sounding effects.

The 775 does have a parameter that can be set to accomodate analog input or digital/optical.

Adaptors from 1/4" unbalanced to RCA are very common. You can find them in Musician's friend, Radio Shack, or likely many other retail/on line sources.

I've burned CD's in the computer and on stand alones - I don't know that one is better than the other, but I do think the learning curve for stand alones is much easier. However, as xstatic indicates, burning on the computer does allow you to use software applications for various editing, and a stand alone pretty much simply records the signal it recieves.

EZ,

ill be using a 246 (unbalanced 1/4 line out), a 244 (same), and then either a 424MKII or a 488 (i think these are also unbalanced 1/4 outs)...

im having trouble realising wether or not a stereo jack is an unbalanced 1/4 jack or not...i dunno if this will work with my portas...

also thinking of getting an M30 and mixdown from there into the standalone. but i think that would be the same, unbalanced 1/4 outs.

any views?

tanx Mikeh, ill look for it..although im having trouble defining unbalanced with these online stores search functions...

Doigo,
I have a 488MKII, and the line outs are rca left and right. I run it out through some outboard gear (comp/EQ) which are mono 1/4", then into my CDRW700. I believe I got the RCA-1/4" cables at Guitar Center. Ebay stores will have them too. Not sure what kind of stores you have to choose from, but keep looking...they're out there.

This type of cable will work for you. It doesn't have to be a Monster cable either.

The difference between a 1/4" stereo and mono cable is visible at the plug itself. The mono cable is a tip/sleeve, a stereo has a tip/ring/sleeve. I'll post pics when I get home if you need 'em.
