Just another guy, really.
Got a 78 Deluxe Reverb. Locating pin on the rectifier tube broke off, tube came out of socket and I plugged it back in wrong. Blew immed. Shop I went to had no tube rectifier, sold me a SS one and said if I didn't like it, he'd exchange it. He now has a tube rectifier in stock.

What should I listen for, one vs. the other? Anyone want to venture as to advantages either way? Thanks.

If you play with the amp cranked up, you'll notice a difference in the sound. It should be a bit "punchier" and more responsive with the SS rect. It also adds a couple extra watts to your output. The tube rect allows a little "sag" in the voltage. This takes a little bit of the attack from the signal. It makes it a little "softer" sounding. Blues guys like the "sag" Hard rockers like the "punch" you get with SS. I think it's not as noticeable if you don't play at higher volume levels where the power supply is under a little "strain". It's possible the power tubes might wear out slightly sooner with the SS rect. Also , operating at the higher output can put a strain on older components (like the filter caps) that may be on their way out anyway.

OK, Now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that SS. rects are NOT recommended in a Deluxe reverb because of high operating voltages in this amp. Have to check some sources to be sure. Maybe someone else has the scoop on this??

Found it . It was in one of Gerald Webers books. He is pretty much "THE" Fender amp guru. ..."Never use a SS. rect in a Deluxe Reverb as the higher voltage can reduce power tube life to minutes! " It seems the voltage in the Deluxe is already operating a bit high for 6v6 tubes and the SS rect can push it well byond what the tubes can handle. He does say that you can use 6l6gc or 5881 tubes with the ss rect but it would have to be rebiased for them. Incidentally, biasing is critical for the deluxe for this reason. Might be a good time to have it checked by a competant tech. 30 ma is recomended.

I would definitely ask for an exchange and order a replacement tube rect.
