I'm using Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 XL, and I've purchased their MP3 encoder. We record at 24/96, but the encoder doesn't accept that format, in my software I can change the format, but only the bit depth not the sample rate. In order to get to the point where I can make an mp3 I have to export as a 16 bit wave then import the wave into a 16 bit 44.1 project then export as mp3. But the 16 bit waves are still at 96 khz when they are imported into the 44.1 khz project and I think this is where I'm getting a lot of distortion added. Same problem occurs when I download a 16/44.1 wave and load it into a 24/96 project.

It sounds like an issue of dithering the files. I am not up on this but I believe you may need a seperate program to "dither" the files. I use GT3 pro and it has a dither option but I have not tried it. I will soon as I have some stuff recorded at 96k an I want to import it to 44.1. I like the 96K because of lower latency 2.7 ms as opposed to 5.9 at 44.1. Hope that helps. Try your help file contents under "dither". :)
