Pretend we dont have all model numbers memorized and rephrase the question in laymens terms. I thought a SR16 was a drum machine. Do you want it be a master clock or what?
 
IIRC corectly the SR16 can send midi out for each of its drum parts....Been a while since I owned one though, so I could be wrong. If thats the case, it should be easy, but I dont have a sr16 manual handy...I see what I can find out.
 
Yep, I just looked up on Alesis's web site, the SR16 sends a midi note msg every time it plays a drum, so you can use it as a controller. Jusr run the midi out to the midi in on your PC, and set the thru to the port your bass is on, your there.
 
Use a drum machine as a bass controller? Does it send velocity data? Do most of your bass lines only have 8 notes? Do you want to set up custom key maps for each tune?

Sounds like a lot of work to me. I would reccomend a cheap 2 octave midi controller. You will need a midi interface for your computer either way.
 
The problem with this is that the SR-16 will most likely send pretty quick "note off" events (I would guess it sends MIDI note-on/note-off messages at the current system grid value). So you won't be able to do things like play sustained bass notes. Also, it's gonna be rough finding your scales, and I don't even think you can get a full octave out of that thing.
 
thanks guys.... I think I'll just bring home my QS6 and forget about it. All my gear is at the studio but I bought some stuff for here(home) and I thought I could easily get away with using the SR-16 to control all the other midi devices. I'll just have to be a little more cramped now! :(
