Squier Bullet Special w/Symour Duncan SH-8 Invader?

I probably already know the answer to this, but how close to a Tom DeLonge Strat sound could I get, by putting a Seymour Duncan SH-8 Invader pickup into a Squier Bullet Special? Or would it just sound like a Squier Bullet Special that's got a Seymour Duncan SH-8 Invader pickup in it? I wish Fender still made Tom DeLonge Strats, but short of hoping I don't get taken on eBay, this is about as close as I figure I can get.

I personally would stay as far away from squire as possible, they are not very well made... Ok, now in response to your question. Even though the SH-8 is the pickup that was used in the Delonge strat, there are other factors to consider. The delonge strat only has one pickup, no toggle switch, 1 volum knob, and no eq knob. Also, his guitar was better made than a squire. You could probably get decently close with your idea, but remember, he has a lot more money than most. Also, he has really good amps. I bet most of his tone comes from the amps. If you really want to sound like delonge, get his setup and his techie. If you just want to get your guitar to sound like his signature series, give your method a try, it can't hurt... The SH-8 isn't a bad pickup and almost anything will be an upgrade from the pickups on the bullet.

The Squier Bullet Special is modelled after the Fender Tom DeLonge Strat, in that it has just one volume knob and one bridge position humbucker, just like it's "big brother Fender" does. I seriously doubt...well, I know that the humbucker in the Squier is not an Invader, but my ideal is to see how close to sounding like the Fender I can get the Squier.

I don't really know all that much, about the quality (or not) of current Squiers, since I bought my newest one, a Squier Fat Telecaster, in 2001, and I'd bought my Squier Bass Pack (P-bass, BP15 bass combo, strap, instruction video and gig bag) the year before on a lay away. Maybe I got lucky, both times, and actually got ahold of a couple of "Tuesday or Wednesday" Squiers. Perhaps the Squier Bullet Special that I tried out, back in 2001 when Mars Music was still in business, was the one that I SHOULD have bought.

Maybe I could save my money, just a bit more than I'd planned, cross my fingers, and hope to score a for real Fender Tom DeLonge Strat, on an eBay auction, or stumble across a used one at a music store. For the past year, I've been toying with the ideal of going Fender (U.S. Special Highway One Telecaster), but thinking I might settle for a Squier.

A lot of the guitars on my current "to buy list" are just inside the $600.00 range, so maybe I could set my bar a tad higher, do a LOT of "test driving," and start scoring me some decent axes. Not that a $600.00 axe will get me playing any better than I can on my "el cheapos," but as long as I get my desired sound just right, and I never play out...who's gonna know? ;)

Hey, for $600 you can get a pretty good axe... you might even be able to grab a delonge off ebay.

Hey Unsprung, hands off my strat!

You'd better not be lookin' at the blue one at IRC! I saw it first. :p

A blue what at IRC??? Ya don't need to worry 'bout me beating ya to it, though...I have no clue as to when the next time I get up to Indy will be. So, if it's gone the next time ya go there, I didn't do it! :)

There's a blue metallic Squire strat Bullet there. Gotta get over there before somebody beats me to it. It's actually pretty good looking, plays well, and is dirt cheap.

So where are you located?
