If I want to get a crazy lofi drum sound a la the Flaming Lips, what kind of compressor should I get? Under $200 if possible.

Thanks!

You could use PSP Vintage Warmer.

Or if you need a rackmount deal, you could use an MXR dual limiter. I'm looking to sell mine, so you can PM me if you want it. :D Crazy, squashed, distorted drums.

Hmmm, LoFi for under $200? Buy three Alesis 3630's and link them together. That should kill any definition.

For real though? I am not sure a compressor is what you are actually after. Careful EQ'ing and more room micing will help that a little.

i picked up the dual limiter from chessrock....fun shall be had

now that you have the mxr, you might want to experiment with bussing

like sending a drum mix to the mxr, maybe without so much kick and barely any cymbals, smashing it beyond belief, and mixing that in with the dry drums. then you get the nice full attack of the drums, cymbals hand a bit better, and the kick can get a bit deeper. but then everything gets huge and distorted.

also, if you are gear mad, try a shure level loc or clone thereof.

these are cheap, and will crush drums:
Symetrix 525
dbx 166

I'm not really wealthy enough to suggest anything expensive.

Speaking of squashed drums....

I actually watched my old bassist (1n 1985) back a truck over our drummer's snare case, with snare inside.... It wasn't pretty, as our drummer was pretty big.... :o :o

I've actually looked into that but they are so rare, even on ebay. Are there clones?

I'm not sure what they use on drums, but I know that the flaming lips are BIG fans of the ART pro VLA, and use it extensively. You could probably find one used for around $200. I think that they run $300 or $400 new.

Vintage Warmer is pretty cool for such duties. In fact, it's a real versatile program that delivers nice punch. I use it on lots of stuff that needs a colored comp while mixing.
