Splitting Soundfonts

Look Mom, I can play!
Okay, how do I do this? In Battery, working as a vst in Sonar, I can import soundfonts but I have a soundfont that has several drum kits in it (sf2). I can only seem to load the top listed drum kit, it doesn't recognise anything else.:(

And yet in kontakt, it loads all the drum kits:)

Is there anything I can do to split the soundfont, to make Battery VST see the different kits?

And am I correct in thinking that the different kits are different Banks?

I don't use Battery - so this may or may not help.

If it works like Live Synty Pro, I patch LSP onto an audio track and load the Sound Font. I then have a midi track, where the output is routed to the LSP track (standard DXi setup).

To choose which kit it uses, I go to the MIDI track and right click on the Patch box (Pch). That brings up a menu where I can choose the kit I want to trigger.

As far as I know, the Bank will be the same for all the kits contained in the one sound font.

Hi Dachay, early for you this morning?:)

Yeah, it works like that for me in LSP but not for Battery, Battery has 8 presets which you can assign to new soundfonts but it doesn't seem able to split a soundfont. If you go to the assigned midi track, all that enables you to do is select a preset.

It must be a limitation of either Battery or VST synths?

The only way i found to split soundfont is with Vienna 2.3, a free software found on Creatives website. With it you can build new soundfont and import a bank that exist in a soundfont to a new soundfont bank.

Try it

Musart

Oh, okay, Musart, I'll give that a go ( I used to have a soundblaster...but I'm much better now thank you:D ).

Musart, what a fine chap you are. D/loading as I post. :D Expect some "now what do I do" posts very soon:rolleyes:

No problem, i'll show you. Lately, I made a "custom" soundfont drumkit from many drum soundfonts found on the internet.

It may sound difficult at the begining but it is very easy when you understand the basic structure of a soundfont.

Vienna 2.3 will help you. Be sure to download the tutorial too !.

Have fun.

Thats great, thanks. I remember using VSStudio a couple of years back, following our very own Ethan Winner's articles on soundfont manipulation.

I thought I was training to be a rocket scientist doing it:rolleyes:

Thought I'll comment. If you are cured from soundblaster, you can not use Vienna I think. I never had a soundblaster (and will probably never get one) and Vienna just refuses to install. I use Alive from Soundfaction. Very easy to use and does what you want to do with easy drags and drops. Not free, but very cheap.

Just a quaestion. Why do you want to use battery. Just use LSP and you won;t need to go through all the trouble. If you have Sonar (which I assume you do), upgrading LSP to full version is compulsory.

I thought anyone can use VSS, not just s/blaster users? Can it only be used with S/B's? But the Alive program looks a killer app, I will consider it for use with LSP s/fonts.

Battery gives me graphic pads to use, I cannot use k/boards for drums, drives me nuts. Thats why LSP is not the percussion answer for me.

I will get the AKAI MPD16 synth before long which allows me to use my fingers and literally will provide me with a full drum kit at my finger tips.;)

Paul. The AKAI is really a super thing to have. I'm too uncoordinated to even use that properly though!!

Hey, Bloodhound, just cuz I might have gear doesn't mean I can use it. I have a L.Paul geetar but can't play like Jimmy Page. In fact, I can't play for Jack ****:D
