Splitting Bass and Drums on DR-670

I'm recording a DR-670 on a Tascam DP-01. I'd like to be able to record the drums on one track (well, actualy two tracks, in stereo) and then the bass line (from the DR-670) on another track. The bass and the drums are programmed together on the same song on the DR-670 and I'll play the song with only the drums playing and then re-record on the next track with only the bass playing.

The problem I have is syncing the tracks. Either I come in too early or too late with the bass. Is there a way to use MIDI (or something else) to make sure that my tracks are in sync?

Wes -

Yes, you can do this, assuming that you can control your DR-670 with the Tascam's internal clock via MIDI (I'm assuming you can do this - it's what I do with my Tascam 2488).

What you would do would be to create a song on the DR-670 with bass and drums. Then, using the Utility function, inhibit the bass line; record the drum portion of the song onto the Tascam. Next, again using the Utility function on the DR-670, inhibit the drum patterns and record the bass line onto your Tascam, on a separate track.

Thanks, Zaph. I've never used Midi before. Where's a good resource for learning how?

Wes, I'm no expert on MIDI, either. I had to rely on my Tascam's documentation, which is kind of cryptic.

What is happening, though, is that the internal clock in your Tascam sends timing and control signals to the DR-670 via the MIDI cable. The tempo that you set in the Tascam will override the tempo set on the DR-670; in fact, the tempo display on the DR-670 will read "MIDI" when it is being controlled by an external MIDI device.

So you set the desired tempo on the Tascam, and set the sync mode to internal clock, and hook up a MIDI cable between the Tascam and the DR-670. When you press the PLAY button on the Tascam, the DR-670 will automatically start playing according to the tempo you set in the Tascam.

The DR-670 can be in either "Pattern Play" or "Song Play" mode when it's being externally controlled.

Hope this helps! :)

Wes, check out page 35 of your DP-01 owner's manual, and it explains how to set up the unit to output a MIDI clock signal.

If you don't have a manual, you can download one from www.tascam.com.

I do this all the time on my DR-3...

1st of all, I program a 1 or 2-bar "countoff" i.e. 1 or 2 measures of a click track just to give me time to count off before the "real" song starts (measure 3)

On beat 1 of the first countoff measure, I record a quarter note bass note.

Now I record the drums & bass separately. I can go back and find the bass note an align it with the 1st drum beat and voila!, they're exactly in sync.
