I can record the first track, let's say guitar, then when I wish to add a vocal, the sound has recorded but I cannot hear anything with earphones or speakers. To hear anything I have to remove the usb and restart "Reaper" which is what I'm using at the moment and I can then hear, however if I then plug in the usb to record the vocal the system has change to using the internal mic with all the background noise that goes with that . . . any clues? . . would be much appreciated. Thanks. PS I'm using pc laptop running Windows XP.

asio = ONE device driver at a time
and usb podcasting mics, well..... suck.
As you've found out they do not handle monitoring well.

sell it and get a standard mic and usb interface.

It's not a USB mic, it's an SM58 with xlr connections . .

does that make any difference?

You need to select the Alesis as the audio output for the guitar track from Reaper.

From the first post it sounds like you are using the audio output from the internal soundcard. Use the Alesis as your I/O. When you record your vocal you need to switch off the output from the vocal track in Reaper or you will be hearing it delayed due to latency. You want to monitor your new vocal track and the recorded guitar track straight off the Alesis.

^^^THIS^^^^

you might want to set it as default in your audio control panel too

sorted it!

It was quite simple after all . . I'm using Reaper and it was just to set the output correctly in Preferences . . thanks for help

I'm glad I spotted this thread, as I was having the same problem!
