I just want to start off saying that, "I am on a VERY tight budget"
I do home recording with cool edit pro and i currently dont have monitors. Actually I haven't even started recording because I havent got a new computer yet. I have just been studying it. I know i cant afford monitors, not even the cheap ones. So I was wondering, if i took a cable that went from my sound cards "output", put a 1/8 to rca adpter on it, then stick it in the input of my stero system (kind of cheap Aiwa stero sytem), will it be a good, super cheap alternative to monitors. Thanks alot. I hope you understand my questions.

It should work if your stereo has the proper inputs. Although you will be able to hear your music and get a descent mix on your stereo, do not be surprised if your mixes sound strange on other systems.
To be honest, there are no alternatives to monitors.

Gotta agree with Fishmed. But that'll beat the shit out of computer speakers.

Yup, I'm still using decent consumer DCM's for "monitors". They lie to me, but at least I've heard a lot of reference material through 'em so that I'm familiar with their lies. I can't wait to get a real monitoring system, but the speakers have given me a lot of mileage to this point.
