"speaker simulater"

hey,

My friend suggested I use something called a "speaker simulator" so i looked it up on the internet and found the term "d/i box". so I looked that up, and found a lot more results. Is a D/I box the same as a "speaker simulator"?

I think he is talking about a guitar amp modeller. One like a POD or V-AMP.

A Direct Injection box or DI changes the guitar impedance and brings it up to line level. It doesn't change the amp or speaker type.

The POD and its ilk include speaker simulation, but that's not all they do.

When a signal hits a speaker there are certain physical things that happen that cause it to sound different -- more desirable-- than it would if you took the Line Out level of the same signal out of the same amp and listened to it via headphones. Some of the signal is lost, some of it is transformed by the fact that a speaker is not a perfect transducer. This effect has a lot to do with why a direct out signal always seems to sound so much more sterile than the sound you get by miking the speaker.

Some devices include a speaker simulation circuit that is supposed to emulate this effect so that a direct line-level signal sounds like a miked speaker. Such a feature can be found in many DI boxes (check out the Hughes and Kettner Red Box Pro ), effects boxes (my old Alesis Quadraverb GT had one), and amp simulators, both analog (the Tech21 Sansamp) ) and digital (the afore-mentioned [url=https://en.audiofanzine.com/guitar-amp-simulator/line-6/POD-XT/user_reviews/]Line 6 POD XT[/URL] ).
