would a 500 watt powered mixer be ok to power speakers rated at 400 watts. i don't understand how the wattage deal works out so let me know what you think. THanks!!!

Depends on the Ohm rating of the device. If the Speakers are
rated at 400 watts @ 4 ohms and the amp is rated 500 watts @
8 ohms, too much power will certainly bow out the speakers and or damage the amp. Insure that the rated ohms for the amp matches those of the speakers!

While Que was right on about making sure that you know the ohm load of your speakers, and what your amp will deliver in wattage at that ohm load, I don't agree even one bit about trying to match the power rating of the speaker with an amp.

It is best to overpower the speaker. Too many good reasons to list, but the main one being that you create headroom at the input of the amp, thus cutting down on clipping the input of the amp.

Find out the rated power of the speakers and look for any amp that is 150% of that. Your speakers will thank you for it.
