Hi! What the hell is SPDIF? I have looked, and everyone seems to know the answer but me (quit laughing). I have a POD (I said quit laughing) and I was wondering if I purchased the M-Audio 2496, which has SPDIF, can I connect the POD to that? Would I want to?
Second-- my controller is attached to my computer via the serial port. If I purchase the 2496, which has MIDI, would I be able to connect the POD to the computer through that, and still be able to use my controller through the serial port without too much confusion? Sorry if this is rambling, but I have about ten seconds to finish writing. Thanks!!

s/pdif is a digital interface protocol.Pod pro has it,regular pod doesn't.It avoids sending the signal through AD DA converters and directly injects it into the computer in 24 bit 44,100 KHz digital form (at least thats how my j-station does it).
I have the hoontech multi card so I'll let others comment on the soundcard question.

one main reason to use s/pdif inputs is to avoid relying on the so-so converters some card come with (althoughts its more than just the converters). If you prefer you can go into the card with high quality converters such as Lucid, ( which is what IM going to buy). If you have a guitar or bass, plug that into the pod then go into a high quality converter, then into the s/pdif inputs on the card. However alot of this depend on what sound you want. If you are new to this, I suggest a Omni studio by M-audio, its a little more than the one you saw, but you can plug your guitar straight in to one of the analog inputs and use its a/d converters. It even has mic inputs and more!!!good quality all for around $400

You should be able to use the MIDI ports on the Audiophile as well as the MIDI-via-serial-port that you are already using with no problem.
