Can anyone (especially owners of both) help me with this:

Is the SP-B3 in cardoid mode close enough to the SP-B1 to use it interchangeably with a B1? Does the SP-B3 cardoid setting "clone" the B1 (or vice versa)?

Thanks,
Paj

No the B3 in cardiod doesn't "clone" the B1.

They do sound different from one another.
How much would be a subjective matter.
Certainly could be complementary to one another, like the C1/C3
could be.

B1/b3

Thanks for the reply. I have a set of B1's that I set uo as an aux pair for live recordings of a percussion trio (usually ORTF), so I was wondering if the B3 would be a good compliment with a B1 for an M-S setup (I have all the other stuff I need for M-S).

Thoughts?

Yes... or better yet, use two B3's.

I've got to agree with DJ  A pair of B3s will give you so many more stereo miking options

I'd like to have a dot-matched pair of B3 specifically for ORTF, Blumlein, and the other stereo techniques.

Too bad they don't sell "Matched" B3 mics... that would be better.

B3/B1

All:

Thanks for your replies. I just purchased a bunch of "try-em" mics based on buzz/reviews but the SP's I have are keepers, so. . .I think I will order a B3. Probably not two, though---I'm settin' $$ aside for a pair of KSM44's. Maybe it's how I have to deal with G.A.S. . . .

Thanks, all
