I'm just wondering if you can still buy the Topaz (Project 8 Series) and if so where? How much do they run for new? Also, how do they compare to an Allen & Heath GL2200 or a Mackie 24x8?

Thanks,
Matt

Go with the A&H or the Mackie. The Mackie is 8 bus and one of it's two sweepable mids is fully parametric.

On the other hand, many people like the warmer "brittish" sound of the A&H pre's and eq.

If you live anywhere near the Gulf Coast (US), I have a Soundcraft 8 bus I'm getting rid of for a steal. It's too heavy to ship though... you'd have to pick it up.

I have a soundtracs topaz 12-4 and it has great quality. I am able to control my inputs so much that there is practically no noise floor on my recording! I would recommend it they have a website just search for it, i think theres only one cert. dealer in florida though.

Brad,

post the Soundcraft in the Free ads forum.....i may know someone who wants to steal it from you.....

Shem- Sorry... I wasn't trying to insult your board. I was speaking strictly on a comparison basis. I have worked with all three consoles over the years.

Gidge- Tell your friend he'll get his a@# kicked if he tries to steal my board ;-)

I've already listed the board there. If your friend lives in Denham Springs also, I'm probably only twenty or thirty minutes away... small world. Anyway, send me an email and I'll give your my office and cell numbers so he can get in touch with me. brad@just-for-musicians.com

I don't want to get this thread any more off track than I already have.

PS. I believe they have discontinued the Project 8 series. MF was getting rid of them on discount awhile back. Don't quote me on that, but I definitly remember them going cheap. At the price, I almost picked one up to use for a monitor console, but the stupid sales kid wouldn't knock off the tax for me. He could have probably paid it out of his own pocket and still made money on the commission ;-)

I have the Topaz Project 8. I like it much better than the Mackie. Used, these are a bargain. That is how I got mine. (Cheaper than cheap) Check some of the online used equipment brokers. Or if you have the stomach for it, Ebay. I see them occasionally for around $1200-$1400 with the meter bridge. They can still be purchased new directly through the US distributor. More information on this can be found on Soundtracs web site at http://www.soundtracs.co.uk/ or http://www.topazmixers.com This company makes a good mixer but has real crappy marketing.

Before I bought mine I did a web search and found a couple of reviews. Mix did one some years back but I was unable to find a link to it. Here is one from 1994 (yes this model been around awhile) http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/1994_articles/jun94/soundtracstopaz.html

This article highlights its strong points as well as it's weak areas better than I could. I really like mine and it gives my studio a certain cache to have something a little out of the ordinary. When a client comes in it is the first thing they comment on. (always positively)

Thanks for all the help. Right now my choice is down to the Topaz or an Allen and Heath GL2200.

I saw and am considering that console. I really hate Mackie and want a new console.

Don't want to mislead... When I rated the Project 8 lower than the others, it was because parts may be hard to find if they are really phasing the console out.

I agree with Don on the bad marketing. If you can find one for $1200 as he suggests, that really would be a good deal.
