okay i might be caving in on the mixer for my 840ex and i saw this smallll mixer in the local music store . does anyone own one of these very small but affordable units it has a phantom power and all so it got me interested since i was thinking of getting a art tube preamp and that would still mean buying a phantom power source. will this small unit cover the basses for me.

Just FYI, the ART tube preamp does have phantom power.....

I almost bought one of those! What turned me off was the lack of channel inserts, which means that can't use the mic pres individually. (well, you can use two at a time panned hard)

I own one of these and Slackmaster is right, I really miss have multiple stereo submix. You can patch around this however with cables but it is kindof a pain. You do get stereo out on the Aux FX channel but only mono back in, my biggest complaint.

As far as quality it is very clean, no apparent noise and has the phantom power switch for my C1 microphone.

The version I have also is powered so I can run a small set of PA speakers for live situations. Mostly I use it at home though.

It does have one other cool feature which is a turntable switch for bringing in my old vinyl records into the computer, RIAA standard.

Overall I have been pleased with the board which cost me $300 on ebay.

thanks for the replies , so does going for a larger mixer meen greater flexibility or more cords to trip me up on the 2 am recording sessions

A submix section is a must for hardware effects or just creating a feed for monitors. Stereo in and out on these is is a must. The Folio, as I mentioned before, is stereo out mono in.

The other critical item is a phantom power switch (preferably per channel and not overall). This allows you to use more pro oriented mics. The Folio has an overall switch but I have to unplug my dynamic mics when I use this.

If you get the above and it's very quiet for the least cost, then you have the mixer you need. I chose the Folio for my home studio because it's a writing studio not a performance one. I never record more than 2 mikes at a time so with 4 mic channels and two rca channels it worked for me.

Cleanliness is the path to Vibe Heaven so check the reviews and buy a mixer overall low in noise. Sorry to sound like dad here.

no thanks dad i miss you, i was thinking two days ago i wasnt going to buy this but now i think i want to try this out. i want to see if the sound quality is there for me im a home recorder and i love my 840ex but i thought i might need to expand the quality and get a good mic and the mixer. maybe ill rent for a month and then see thanks to all for the advise. cheers merry christmas.
