Im making plans to build my recording studio in my garage. From all the posts I have read. Everyone is saying that mass is what is needed to really soundproof a room, and not eggcrate material. I had an idea, which I would like some feedback on. I was thinking of placing concrete sheets (used for bath room backsplashs 1/2 depth)over the drywall. If mass is important, then by place these sheet I should soundproof the room. Let me know what you think. Thanks

from what I understand, you have to also pretty much make sure the room is air tight. even if you covered all the walls, you would still have the ceiling to worry about. i'm sure the concrete backing board would be some what effective but who knows to what degree.

I have been looking for solid research on "Durarock" no luck yet.

Durock is indeed heavy stuff, very dense.

However it is also not as cheap as gypsum board. I am guessing that for the price of a half inch of Durock you could buy two layers fo 5/8 inch gypbd, which would be more mass. So unless the extra inch or so of floor space is critical then just do two layers of gypsum board.

Oh yeah and the bit about watching out for flanking paths for sound is important. One badly done wall outlet can wreck a lot of expense in mass.
