i have cool edit pro but i cant seem to save as an mp3 so im wondering if anybody knows where i can find soundforge for free?

Cool Edit can't handle mp3s on its own - you have to buy the mp3 add-on from them - it's cheap and works well.
As for free Sound Forge, this isn't the forum for exchanging information about pirated software, of course. But you were wondering about free demo downloads, right? Try the Sound Forge website.

why would i buy soundforge just to convert to mp3? i just want a program that will take a wav and convert to mp3, will the soundforge demo do that?

You can get c-dex. www.cdex.n3.net
It converts wav to mp3 and vice versa, and it's free!
It uses the lame encoding engine...Which is one of the best....
