Hi everybody - have any of you really got to grips with these yet? And do you load them into your sblive or just access them from a directory on the desktop or elsewhere? Here's my latest soundfont saga:

I have this song almost done - I didn't like the gm piano so tried to access this 24mb steinway sf from a directory on the d/top - anyway it said not enough memory. So I loaded the steinway into the audiocard and was then able to attach it via Tools/Soundfonts, but it still wouldn't play. So I went back to the directory to get a smaller one - now it wouldn't attach, saying 'undefined soundfont error' - I saw the path in the attach-box began only with the name of the directory itself, instead of C:/windows/desktop... etc etc, didn't see what I could do about it, but when I dragged it out of the directory and onto the desktop, I was (for some reason) able to access and attach it from there... Then I thought well should I load that into the soundcard too, so I did, and it works ok... so I got my piano...

Trouble is now I can't get the other sounds I was using from sf banks in the desktop directory (and which I had already attached before any of this began) - 'rain' for example keeps changing to 'seashore' - it also seems that if you delete a track with a soundfont in the other tracks using the same sf bank are also affected. This is all with cwpa 8, btw.

I am wondering if the problem is occurring because I have one sf bank attched from inside the audiocard and one from the desktop directory - Do you know if you have to have all your soundfonts in one place - ie in the card or in a specific directory? has anyone found themselves in similar tangles when it comes to soundfonts? I thought I was almost done - it's driving me nuts :( malgo.

Do yourself a favor and buy the Yamaha MU15 with 676 high-quality sounds. You can
probably purchase one for less than $300 USD at your local music dealer.
The XG (GM) sounds, three internal effects processors and 21 drum kits are fantastic!
I have yet to hear ANY soundfont GM collection that sounds this good and I doubt
I ever will. You can access the sounds via MIDI or serial port. I use the the Yamaha
QY70 which has the same soundset plus an added sequencer. It's about $100
more. I have an extensive collection of soundfonts for my Live but I always go to
the Yamaha for its better sounds. I've wrestled with the soundfont deal just as you
have. And though I feel like I have a handle on it (I use the soundfont manager from the
pull down menu in Liverware), it's just not worth the trouble for the quality of sounds.

I know this doesn't help your problem much but it does offer an alternative.
Good luck....pete o
