Yeah... so one is a chinese mic and the other is a hand made mic based on the FET47 capsule. The MXL is ~$300 while the Soundelux is about a grand. I just bought a Langevin DVC for my pres today. I have read a review which states that the MXL69 smoked 11 other mics ranging up to $5k. My dealer says he likes the Marshall mics ok but that the Soundelux is basically an investment. I just bought two 603s which work just great on accoustic guitars. I also bought the dirt cheap MXL63M at MF. Believe it or not, it is a huge improvement over the AKGC3000 I had been using for the last few years. Is the 69 really that good or will I be kicking myself for not getting the more expensive mic?

jeez....

Being a huge improvement over the C3000 says more about the C3000 than the Marshall. Almost anything would be (except maybe an Oktava 219 or a C1000).

I'm glad your new mic is working out for you. But you should take very lightly any reviews that say a $300 mic "smokes" any $5000 mic. And you might want to write down the name of the reviewer so that in the future you can save valuable time and just skip over their reviews.

Unless the guy talking is named Stephen Paul...

around $5000.. i'm sorry but no mxl can hang with the true quality you get from a Blue Bottle...i got to be in a studio running one of them for vocals.. SMOKED a u87ai, and i love that mic for vocals.. but not to many can afford a Bottle...
mxl's are nice for home studios.. i think the v69 i liked the sound of and the 77 i'm not sure..
but i can go to a lower budget and find mics under $500 that sound better than the mxl..
the person doing the review.. hey he could have got paid to say what ever.. do you have a link to the review so we all can read it

The reviews are on the Mogami/Marshall website.

Mogami/Marshall Elctronics

I would also say one thing about the MXL mics. Harvey pointed me to the 603s mics which I have used for accoustic guitar and fiddle. The results were excellent. Not excellent for an inexpensive mic, excellent period.

There are actually two reviews. One is by Mitch Gallagher and the other is by someone named Fett. Both of these reviews are current issue Feb 2003 mags. There are other reviews of other models as well. I know that Harvey is really big on these mics and I trust his ears. I've also noticed the V77 coming way down in price as well. I don't know the difference between the 69 and the 77 though.

Two very different sounds. The V77 has more top end and sounds very neutral (but bright).

The V69 has a little more top end than the V67, but still retains a lot of the warmth of the V67. The difference between the V77 and V69 is similar to the difference between the 2003 and the V67. At least to my ears.

I have really thought a lot about this. Basically, I have a home studio with an occasional client. Last week I tracked a young band. I used the MXLV67M for vocals. The guys in the band were very pleased with the vocal sound as well as the accoustic guitar sounds captured with the 603s. I ordered the V67G and the V69ME kit today. Shipped express to my door was just under $400. I had $1200 to "play" with. The left over $800 can go towards room treatment and a max wall portable iso booth. I think I am getting way more bang for my buck going this route. Since I don't have to order the wall treatment stuff before next week, I'll have the chance to use these mics this weekend on a project. If I for some reason am unhappy, I'll ebay the suckers and go the other route.

Of course I take all reviews with a grain of salt. Do I expect a $5k mic for $300? No.... I do expect a useable tool that from all reports looks, sounds, and feels like a much higher end mic.
