How do I connect my cheap mixer's "monitor out" (streo RCA) to my monitors "in" (1/4" or XLR)? Right now I have them hooked up via the mixer's 1/4" "master mix out" using simple patch cords but am worried about damaging the speakers using these types of instrument cables. Can anyone help?

You can use those same cables and get some RadShack RCA to 1/4" adapters.

Superfast answer! thanks mm. Howcome you cant use instrument cables to connect guitar amplifiers to speakers but you can use them to connect monitors to mixers? Both are speakers aren't they?

The difference is where the amplifier is - You run line level out of the board through a shielded (instrument) cable to the amplifier (in this case, the amplifier is in the speaker cabinet).

Inside the cab, the speaker level signal is sent from the amp to the speakers through unshielded speaker-class cable.
