i got a question. if you get a really good mixer, and plug it in and make sure the volume levels on it are good and plug it in the LINE IN, would you need one of those expensive sound cards?

Depends on what you mean by "need"...
Check out Don China on mp3.com for an example of just what you're talking about. Nice equipment plugged into a $17 Ensoniq sound card.

what i meant is this: i plan to buy one of those huge mixers from Mackie for my studio and i plan to use my cpu to record. what i was sayin is im pretty good with electronics and i was wondering wouldnt it be easier to build one of those boxes and hook it up to a regular soundcard instead of buying a whole a card wit input i dont really need? and also if i build it myself i could probably have more input and ouputs too.

Wait a second here. You're gonna go for say a 24 into 4 or 24 into 8 mixer and then offload it into some sort of soundcard to digitize the signal so you can play with it in your computer, make CDs, whatever. I think your question is: how do I get around the limitation of a single stereo pair of inputs? Well- you can't.
If you're really jonesing to use the multiple bus outputs on your mixer, you need multiple independent inputs on your soundcard. But a 24 into 8 mixer also has the capability of 24 into 2, right? So why not learn how to use
the digital tools and your new mixer first and then get the better soundcard (a Layla or an Aark 20/20 each have 8 inputs, I think; check with them to make sure) when you're really ready. Just my 2 cents.

24 tracks into a stereo soundcard is two tracks... This idea pretty much blows. It could be done though... You'd have to have the mack daddy ears for mixing. If you pulled it off ( 24 tracks recorded on 2...) I think you would have a job at any studio you walked into...

not to mention a/d conversion, and 16 vs. possibly 24 bit resolution

Sorry I left out the Gadget Labs 8/24. This unit comes highly recommended by Satan, the advantage here being, you could tell your old lady, "The devil made me do it." :)
