Soundcards/Converters - Which one?

I'm considering purchasing a multichannel soundcard/converter to upgrade my sblive system to a true DAW. I have a PIII 450, Win98, and run Cake 9.0.

I need to have at least 16 channels of ADAT input as well as analog I/O, although the analog is not an immediate concern. I've been looking at Frontier Designs and MOTU gear primarily and wondered what your collective opinions are.

At first glance it appears that the Frontier stuff is "higher end", but I know a lot of guys are using MOTU 2408, 1224, etc. very successfully.

Would I be better off spending the extra money on a Dakota/Tango combo or a MOTU 2408mkII? I've also looked at RME Hammerfall, but it looks like I can't run that with Cakewalk because of lack of wave drivers. Is that corect?

I don't have any experience with the other units you mentioned but I've been using a MOTU 2408 mkII for the last month and am very pleased with it's performance. I've been thru a lot of sound cards and software in the last 16 months (Pulsar, Yamaha DSP Factory, ProTools Digi 001 and Gina to name a few)and so far I like the MOTU best. Just my two cents.
