Soundcards and Monitors

How important is it to match-up the soundcard and monitors (by brand, by specs, ...? ). Each soundcard outputs differently and each set of monitors output differently.

The reason I ask is that I remember, way back when, it was important to match all stereo components and speakers...do these same rules apply to soundcards and monitors?
 
I'd say not at all. The only thing I would worry about matching is their relative quality. Now that I think about it, since you left power amp out of the equation, I'm guessing you're thinking powered monitors, which may elicit a different response from someone, but probably not.
If it does matter, Lynx better start making monitors. :)
