Soundcard to Soundcard

Ok, folks, I'm doing something weird:

I am trying to record from one sound card on one computer to a sound card on another. You would think this would be a simple thing, but apparently it's not. My main problem at this point is that I can't ever get the volume control perfect enough. You see, the dynamic response and the noise level are fine, but it would be really, really nice if I could just get the amplitude levels to match. Does anyone know how to do this? I don't mean match so it sounds the same to my weak ear, I mean match to within 8 bit resolution, for recording purposes.

I know someone is going to ask why I don't just put the sound file on a disk and stick it in the other computer. I'm not copying the sound, I'm using this as for a demonstration of the convolutional properties of waves in a linear system. Science stuff. I can handle the science, but this sound card stuff is over my head...

Oh, FYI, I have access to a Linux, Windows and a Mac computer if necessary. I figure my solution will likely be a software one, but I am open to any suggestions.
