I have a Shure Sm58, connected to a Behringer Shark DSP 110, connected to the line in socket of my soundcard (Yamaha Y40). The line out goes to my hi-fi.

Until recently, I could record fine. Then, after a break of a month or so without recording audio, I tried to record with no success.

Here's what happens:

Any sound I make near the microphone comes comes out perfectly fine through my hi-fi speakers. From this, I assume that my soundcard is receiving a signal and is able to send one. However, on the Windows sound mixer nothing shows up on the meter. In other software I get get the input meter up to about -40, but if I choose to record this faint signal I either get silence or a very very faint signal.

Despite being quite sure that the problem lies within my computer, I have nevertheless tried different microphones, different leads. I have attached headphones to the DSP 110 output and that is fine.

I have messed about with all of the soundcard settings and reinstalled its driver. I've done everything I can think of with no success.

The only thing I can think of that might have explain anything, is that during the last month I've installed a newer version of directx. Can this possibly have mucked everything up?

Anyone got any ideas?

within that month you most likely reconfig some aspect of the cards software or system, maybe bios, external hardware config, it's hard to say, start from the card and work to your hardware, basic functions...
