im customizing a gateway pc and it doesnt say anything about a soundcard. It just says "Integrated Enhanced Audio". Obviously i dont know much about the recording process yet but i was wonderin if i even need one to start with cause i plan on buying a better one in the future anyways.

Not sure if I understand your last sentence. You don't 'need' a soundcard already in the machine no, since you plan on buying one specific for recording.

So I guess the answer is, no.

If you mean to start with the soundcard for recording until you buy a better card, then the answer is, yes.

Integrated enhanced audio means that the soundcard is hardwired into the motherboard. Disable it when you upgrade to one for recording.

How do I disable it?

If this is onboard audio, you can disable it thru device manager from the drop down menu in the cards properties.

Disable in BIOS

You may even wish to check your puter documentation. Many systems have onboard hardware that should be disabled in the BIOS setup routine.

To get to that you usually hit some key, in some bios the delete or the escape key, at a specific place in the boot sequence. The BIOS stratup screen before OS loads usually tells you when and what to do. Doing this allows you to totally remove the hardware Windows control panel. I would remove the hardware in control panel then reboot machine and enter bios setup on that boot to do this.

My guess that even though you only disable device in control panel it still loads drivers for device in memory. That could cause a potential conflict with new soundcard's operation. (This is an educated guess, I'm just profecient not a guru here)

I would also not install the new sound card in the system until the above has been done. I would not be suprised to see you also have to update Direct X once thats all done but do not know that. Your soundcard may well come with the Direct X stuff it needs however its worth checking on updates for it's drivers as the card may have been on the shelf for one or more driver updates.

Hope this helps you and not confuses the issue for you.
