soundcard question

I'm interested in recording music and I have a shure sm57 and a SoundMAX Digital Audio soundcard. does anyone know anything about this soundcard? will it work for recording atleast passibly well?
I'm looking as buying a direct box and am not sure if i shoud get a soundcard and direct box combo like the omni studio or if the difference between the soundcards isn't too big i could save a few bucks and just get a direct box.
oh and also what is the best direct box to get for in $230 range or less. (preferably less but i'm still willing to consider ones at $230) If someone can answer even one of these questions then it would be much appreciated.

Your Shure SM57 is a great mic, but SoundMAX isn't for musicians, and wasn't mean't to be. It's really just an audio chip for the PC. If you want quality, go for a real card. I got an OmniStudio and never looked back...

sweet thanks. yea i'm leaning towards the omni studio but it is a little pricy. Are there any good soundcards like comperable or maybe a little worse than the omni studio for a better price?
I was also thinking about getting the audiophile 2496 (or something like that) along with the Behringer UB802 Eurorack 8 Input Mixer. This works out to be $60 cheaper than the omni studio, would the sound be that much different and would it serve the same purpose?

100 bucks for a Delta audiophile and a little ~100 dollar Behrineger board is perfectly fine; I had a similar setup for a while, and had no problem with it. (If you can spring a little more for a Yamaha MG mixer, I'd say go for it.)
 
mook you can save money if you use mic pre's in old cassette decks.
or build your own like i do. but i would advise you take a electronics course for a couple of months for safety reasons. ie: dont start to build circuits if you have zero knowledge. take an adult college course evenings.a great little diy mic pre is if you go to linear technologies web site and check out a pff for the LT1115. this will cost you about 20 bucks to build.
i subbed a op37 and liked it better. this mic pre is tough to beat unless you spend big money. or else get the yamaha mg series.
check out the song im too old to rock and roll and many others at soundclick.com/bmanning that used my diy approach. if you want a comparison the song take my love was done using a megabucks console.
not much diff really. for soundcard cant beat that audiophile. as an alt check out the 4 input maya sometime. 100 bucks. but its very new so cant comment.
as always for sequencer i recommend powertracks (48 tks) from pgmusic.com
at 29 bucks. if you want a cheap condenser demo a cad gxl series. lots of folks seem to like them.
