Hi,

I'm researching to get a new soundcard for my laptop Mac and I have been looking at different solutions, like the RME Fireface and Presonus Firestudio. One thing i don't really get is the "software mixers" that they are talking about for these products. E.g. in the case of Fireface "total mix".

What is the function of these "mixers"? I thought the point was to get, say 4 sources of sound into 4 channels in your recording software. Then you can mix them whatever way want within that software. Why would you want to mix with yet another software??? Please Educate me!

The software you describes usually controls the mixing internal to the device without having to route the audio in and out of the seperate DAW...

It's just a software front-end to control routing and levels in the hardware.
