In january I'm putting together a little mobile studio to record my band and other local bands and groups.
For my interface I was originally looking at two daisy chained presonus firepods (I'm needing a minimum of 8 XLR inputs and 3 line inputs that can be used simultaniously)
Then due to budget constraints I could do with finding something cheaper.
I heard about the Phonic Helix Firewire 24 desks but they're not released in the UK yet. The Helix 18 is released, but I'm not sure if it has all the abilities to record what I need. (I'll go into detail why I need the inputs in abit)
So I started thinking about using regular analogue mixer with a soundcard.
But I'm fairly weak at that area.
Would it be possible to use a mixer such as the Soundcraft SX going through the computers soundcard and coming out seperately on the software?
I.E. Can I for example, record vocals on channel 1, bass on 2 both at the same time and have the vocals come out onto channel 1 on my software and the bass on channel 2?
Or is that impossible?
What I'll be using the inputs for.
The 8 XLR inputs.
2 Kick drums. (1 RV dynamic and 1 Blue Kickball so I can mix the two different tones)
1 Snare mic.
3 Tom mics
2 Overheads.
Then the three line inputs.
2 Guitars DI'd going into NI guitar rig and sent back through the headphone amp.
1 Bass doing the same, or just DI'd through POD or amp.
The reason I'm doing this with the guitars is so I can get a rough tone and allow the drummer to play along with the guitarists. But without any leakage from the guitar amps on the drum mics.
So I can have a perfectly isolated drum signal and then tweak the guitars or record them individually via amps later.
So if you can use a standard analogue mixer such as the SX with a soundcard and seperate signals into seperate channels then please let me know! And please let me know what specs I'll need in a soundcard to do this.
Thanks alot.
