soundcard input clips heavily??

hey i just wondered, i have a m audio 410, and when im recording vocals through a mixer into my soundcards, the input signal on my soundcard clips! but does that matter, because the recorded product does not distort??

can you hear the distortion?
it's probably hitting the clip light just a bit and it's hardly noticeable...but you're still going over. It'd be safe just to turn it down a little bit on the preamp.

TURN IT DOWN! If you're recording at 24 bits you just don't need to be that hot to be miles above the noise floor or to have good bit resolution, and your sound is being damaged way before you hear obvious distortion.

If you compress the vocal later, that clipping might rear it's ugly head big time.
